Andrew H. Macdonald:
We are not developing sustainably.
Despite all the new development in Alexandria, our schools are overcrowded; we are not acquiring enough open space; we are not investing enough in recreational resources; our streets are becoming increasingly clogged with traffic; our sewer infrastructure is at capacity in many places; our debt and property taxes are rising rapidly.
We must rethink our planning strategies and goals and listen more closely to the concerns of citizens. The benefits of new development are too often inadequate and uncertain in Alexandria. They should be clearer, and their impacts should be more clearly understood.
I grew up in Alexandria. I have extensive civic and political experience, which includes being an elected member of the City Council. I will work with the community to shape a sustainable vision for the future.
Andrew H. Macdonald:
First, I would work with the Council and the City Manager to put in place a much more effective, community-centered planning process that includes a much more thorough review of the benefits and costs of major development decisions.
Second, I would refocus the City’s efforts to plan for the expected growth in school population. The City Council must do more to support the continued improvements in the quality of education in Alexandria’s schools.
Third, I want to bring more attention to the importance of the environment in all of the city’s decisions. We need to strengthen our Eco-City charter, and we need to invest more in recreational and open space needs to match our city’s growing population.
Andrew H. Macdonald:
I am an earth scientist by training, not a developer. I believe I am more interested in making sure that the entire community is involved in public policy decisions than my opponent is. I am less inclined to assume that simply more development is good for Alexandria.
Unlike my opponent, I don’t think that just because Alexandria’s debt received a AAA credit rating, we are on a long-term, sustainable financial path. I don’t think we are addressing all of the major planning issues, such as schools and parks, in a rigorous way.
If elected, I will bring a fresh perspective to governance: new ideas about what constitutes “smart growth” and community involvement.
